Psychotherapist in the Boulder Area

Richard “D.J.” Bishop LPC, LAC

As a client-centered, experiential therapist and psychotherapist serving the Boulder area, I’m dedicated to helping people transform their life stories. My work focuses on supporting my clients in identifying and challenging harmful narratives and cultivating more connected relationships with themselves, their loved ones, and the world around them.

The Latin root “cura'' means to heal. This is why I believe in collectively curating our shared space, goals, and work to transform wounding narratives into healing scars that connect us.

Passionate about unpacking stories, I pursued this thread in my education through a double masters in history and psychology. I am in awe of the power a story wields to harm and wound us, or heal and connect us.

During my professional journey I have had the privilege of being a primary clinician at Jaywalker Lodge. Jaywalker is a renowned drug and alcohol treatment center for men in Carbondale, Colorado. I spent my time there helping men walk through trauma so that they could better integrate into 12-step recovery communities.

After Jaywalker, I started my private practice and serve as a guide at Onsite Workshops in Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee. Onsite is one of the preeminent experiential trauma treatment centers in the U.S. I lead individual and group intensives oriented on helping clients move through trauma, grief, anxiety, and relationship challenges. These experiences led me to starting my private outpatient therapy practice for substance abuse treatment in the Boulder area. I also work with clients to reduce anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

I am dedicated to changing the narratives of my own life through the same methods I share with my clients. If you would like to schedule a free psychotherapist consultation in the Boulder area, reach out. I look forward to connecting with you!

I am both a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Addiction Counselor, trained in the following modalities:

LGBTQIA Affirmative Therapy (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual)

While studying psychology at Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA) I specialized in LGBTQIA  Affirmative therapy. AULA is one of the few schools in the country to offer this specialization.

I identify as a straight, white, cisgender male with male pronouns (he/him/his), and as an ally to the LGBTQIA community. As an ally, I am dedicated to helping those who identify as LGBTQIA experience the same rights I experience as a straight, white male. I know enough to know that I will never know everything, and that the term “expert” can be wielded as one of harm. I simply walk with my clients, supporting them through the challenges of isolation, into the arms of supportive community.

Psychodrama in the Boulder Area

Psychodrama is a type of experiential therapy created 100 years ago that treats issues through action methods involving role play, empty chair work, and group dynamics. The goal is to tap into the intelligence of your body to cultivate deeper attunement with your feelings and emotions. Psychodrama certification is a multi-year journey that requires at least 780 hours of training. I have already logged a few hundred hours through a recurring professional training group and work with a certified psychodrama supervisor who has attained the highest certification possible of Trainer, Educator, Practitioner (“TEP”). You can learn more about psychodrama on the Good Therapy website and certification at The American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy. In my Boulder-area practice, with my specialization in experiential therapy, I’m here to support you on your healing journey.

EMDR

I am trained in parts 1 and 2 of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and have been practicing it since 2016. EMDR is a modality of therapy that enables healing from the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences or more extensive trauma. It was created in the late 1980s by Francine Shapiro. This modality of therapy frees painful memories stored in the nervous system to heal traumatic responses. For more detailed information visit The EMDR Institute.

12-Step facilitation

Working in addiction treatment since 2016, I have extensive experience with 12-step facilitation. I honed this skill set at Jaywalker Lodge, one of the top addiction treatment facilities in the country. Twelve-step facilitation focuses on clearing the obstacles keeping the addicted from effectively accessing the powerful free resource that is the 12-step community, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, and others. I view the 12-step community as one of many tools in the tool box used to treat addiction. The common element to all methods of intervention is the role of community in recovery. My goal in providing substance abuse treatment to Boulder area patients is to help my clients cultivate their own healing through connection to communities, which they can access independently over the long term. For more information visit the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Mindfulness Training

I am a certified facilitator in the Mindfulness in Recovery (MIR) program. To attain this certification I completed the course, multiple meditation retreats, and worked through the basic text of the MIR program with the founder John Bruna. The main benefit I gained, and what I share with my clients, is an exercise in empowerment to choose and intervene on the thoughts, feelings, and physiological responses we experience throughout the day.
